Mrs. Bivins’s Fabulous First Graders, Room 12

My name is Lori Bivins, and I am very happy to have your children in my first grade class this year! This is my second year teaching, and my first year at Calabasas School. Being a part of the Calabasas Community is special, because I attended Calabasas School when I was in 6th grade. I grew up in the neighborhood, and my parents still live around the corner.

I currently live in Aptos with my husband and two children. My son is 14, and my daughter is 12. We also have a very energetic 1 1/2 year old yellow Labrador named Zoey.

HIGHLIGHTS IN THE CLASSROOM

March has been a month filled with science exploration. Our reading theme is Our Earth, and has focused on our environment. We have read about the forest, caterpillars and butterflies, and way to protect the earth. In science we are learning about the weather, and how it changes from day to day and season to season. We are making kites and are going to observe how the wind moves. We have also been given the opportunity to have a gardening class one day a week, taught by our garden teacher Mr. Cronyn. The children are enjoying it, and they have already planted seeds and are taking care of them so they can grow.

In math the children are working hard to learn all of their addition facts to twenty. Please practice these at home with them, so that they can master them. We will soon begin our unit on clocks and telling time.

Our writing has been focusing on expository report writing and the children are learning how to write about an animal by using facts they have read. We will soon be beginning practice how to write personal narratives. Please encourage your children to talk to you about their experiences. The verbal story telling helps them to develop their narrative skills.
