We have finally culminated our year as first graders. Please continue to help your children withtheir studies over their summer vacation so they are ready for second grade when they start in August. Here are some homework ideas: Read from book bags everyday and log it in your Cougar Readers. Discuss the stories your child reads to you. Possible areas of discussion would be I wonder why the author wrote this book? Do you agree with_______? Do you disagree with_______? Why? How could the ending be different? What else could the characters in the story have done to solve the problem?Practice High Frequency words. Keep a journal (write about what you do everyday.Practice your numbers from 1-100(look for patterns in your numbers and place value). Let your child help you with cooking. Play games with your family. Make observations of nature around you and draw a picture of your observation. Below you will find a writing sample and a writing Rubric that the District uses to grade writing. We are starting a new genre in writing. We are working in Personal Narrative Writing such as A long time ago when I went to________________________. Next I saw___________________. My mom looked at me and said, “_____________”. I said, “__________________”. Then___________________. It was the ____________.You can practice writing like this with your child at home to help them excel in school.
Have a wonderful Summer Vacation and see you all on Wednesday, August 12th, 2009.
