Mask Making — Traditions and Concepts of Masks — Learning Literacy and Math Through Ceramics
Our K-4th grade students and teachers participated in a wonderful art and literacy integration program this spring. With the support of the Santa Cruz Council of the Arts (SPECTRA Program) we were honored to have the teaching artist Claudia Stevens here at Calabasas for a six week residency. Concepts surrounding mask making traditions from other countries, art concepts involving symetry and measurement and reading and writing were all integrated into this project. Professional development and learning by teachers on successful ways to incorporate ceramics and art into the curriculum was an underlying goal of this project as well. As an added bonus, works from some of the students were chosen for the Santa Cruz Council of the Art’s annual Art Show in various locations throughout Santa Cruz County!
